Don't let the title of this event fool you! 

It's not just for Spanish-speakers or dancers. It's for anyone who has struggled with the tension of assimilation in the U.S. or anywhere else. If you or anyone you love is dealing with these statements, this event is for you:


  • "Am I authentically participating in my culture if I can't speak my home country's language?"
  • "I want my children to be able to speak to their grandparents, but now they only want to speak English."
  • "I'm tired of being teased and corrected when I try to speak Spanish (or your family's language)."


Rodney Eric López explores these themes and makes the case for why the arts are just as important as language in identity formation. Join us for an evening of conversation and food, with a special dance performance choreographed by Addie Diaz!

Part Literary Analysis, Part Personal Reflection and Part Community Conversation

"I Don't Speak Spanish" is a workshop that offers participants the chance to examine themes of identity and belonging. Through the lenses of both recorded poetry and his lived experience as a Nuyorican Salsa dance educator who struggles with his own relationship to speaking Spanish.


Rodney Eric Lopez invites attendees to join in an exploration of the intersection of language, artistic expression, and cultural affirmation.


The workshop will end with a dynamic Salsa performance that will leave everyone moving!
